History

The idea for the Gamma Phi Omega-Lambda Chapter Swan Scholarship was first introduced by Monica 'roMAY' Gonzalez. She mentored a group of young Latinas while volunteering in the Champaign area. Monica realized that many of her mentees did not aspire to attend college because of the financial burden it would place on their families. In an effort to combat this mentality, Monica proposed the idea to host a fundraiser and the Swan Scholarship was born!

With much dedication and work Monica's dream became a reality. In May of 2009, the sisters of Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. Lambda Chapter held a golf outing that raised over $4,000.  The dream has lived on year after year as the sisters have held three consecutive bowling events in May of 2010 - 2014. In 2015 and 2016, we held a scholarship banquet. And our most recent fundraiser was our Pie-A-Swan!

The Swan Scholarship is now embraced by many other chapters and thousands of dollars have been raised to help support young Latinas pursuing higher education.
